Nuthatch was done during a time when I wasn’t planning my pieces. Instead, I would intuitively make a canvas and then observe it for a couple of days until an idea came to me. This came from an idea from the book “Big Magic” that if an idea wants to be made, it will find a person willing to bring it to life. So I waited and listened.

What I ended up creating was a portrait of what has become my favourite bird to watch. A Nuthatch. I absolutely fell in love with watching these little guys hopping up and down the tree trunks in my backyard. I especially loved watching them when they sort of hang on the tree with their heads out like in my painting. They are different. Kind of like the odd balls of the birds I see in my yard.
